The Cavatigozzi Monastery ( Santa Maria Maddalena della Cava or alla Cava ) was a Cistercian abbey in Lombardy , Italy . It was six kilometers west of Cremona in the province of the same name , near the village of Cava Tigozzi (Cavatigozzi).
history
The abbey, founded in 1231 as a daughter monastery of the Cerreto monastery , probably took the place of an earlier settlement of regular canons or Benedictines . As the daughter of Cerreto, she belonged to the Filiation of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The first abbot was a certain Bellotto. An important grangie is said to have been in the monastery . In 1497 the monastery, which was probably never fully equipped, joined the Italian Cistercian congregation. It was probably abolished in 1799 (according to other information in 1782).
Plant and buildings
It is believed that the Cistercians did not erect any new buildings. No remains of the monastery have survived. It is unclear whether the existing baroque complex is connected to it.
