Chammünster Monastery

The monastery Chammünster is a former convent of Benedictine in today Cham district Chammunster in Bavaria in the diocese of Regensburg .

history

The monastery consecrated to the Assumption of Mary was allegedly founded as a Benedictine monastery by monks from the Regensburg Abbey of St. Emmeram on behalf of Duke Odilo of Bavaria as early as 739 . The first documentary mention goes back to the year 819. It had supraregional importance for the missionary work not only of the Bavarian Forest, but also of Bohemia. In the first half of the 10th century, however, the monastery perished during the Hungarian storms .

Legend is that, supposedly under Emperor Heinrich II . made establishment of a canon monastery .

As a result, the cathedral became the seat of the dean's office in Cham and the original parish of 35 parishes.
