Därstetten Monastery
The Därstetten Monastery was a canon of the Augustinian order in the Swiss community of Därstetten .
history
The Tarenchat prioratus monastery, first mentioned in 1228 in the diocesan directory of the diocese of Lausanne , was probably founded by the barons of Weissenburg at the end of the 12th century . The name Tarenchat can be derived from the neighboring mountain Turne . Because the monastery was the only church to the right of the Simme, which is the shady side of the valley, the monastery was often in the shadow of the Turne. Därstetten developed from Tarenchat .
In 1233 Pope Gregory IX introduced the monastery under his protection. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the monastery made large land gains, among other things, the Oberwil church set was donated to the monastery in 1326 by the Weissenburgers. In the 15th century the monastery went downhill, which could be related to the extinction of the barons of Weissenburg . In 1486 the monastery was so impoverished that it was abolished by a bull from Pope Innocent VIII and the monastery property passed to the St. Vincent monastery in Bern .
Since then, the former monastery church has been the village church of the Reformed parish of Därstetten.
church
The original altar house consisted of a long hall, which corresponds to the current nave. As a one- apse hall, the church had only one apse . The choir was separated from the lay house by a 60 cm thick wall. In the monk's choir, stone back walls of choir stalls were found. The lay house is built one step lower than the choir and separated from it up to the top. The monks' choir was probably covered with a vault . On the south side of the choir there was a door for the canons. Exactly on the opposite side was a door to the sacristy built directly on the church , of which only the foundation walls remain today.
Wall paintings from the 14th century have been preserved on the north wall of the church: a depiction of St. Christopher and a picture of the church patron Mary with two bishops . It is not clear whether the two bishops are the provosts of the monastery at the beginning of the 14th century, namely Ulrich von Thun and Ulrich von Rümlingen.
Other monastery buildings are believed to be in the area of today's rectory.
