Holy Spirit Monastery (Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The monastery Heilig Geist Neumarkt was a monastery of the Canons of the Holy Spirit in Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate in Bavaria in the diocese of Eichstätt .

history

The monastery consecrated to the Holy Spirit was founded in 1239 by Marquard Puttigler, mayor of Haguenau / Alsace , his son Marquard, mayor of Neumarkt, and knight Heinrich Puttigler. The certificate of confirmation was issued by Pope Gregory IX. Issued January 11, 1239. As was usual in the Middle Ages, it was outside the city, in front of the lower city gate (called Nürnberger Tor or Spittlertor ). The hospital was established at the request of the brothers of the Order of the Holy Spirit of the Holy Spirit Hospital in Sassia . The cross with a dove depicted on the seals of the hospital indicates that they belong to the order. In addition to the usual vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, the lay brothers of the order also took the vows of service to the poor and sick. The task of the hospital was to take care of the poor elderly and strangers in need. From the 14th century onwards, beneficiaries were accepted, who thus secured better care than those who were accepted free of charge; after her death, her property fell to the hospital. In addition to the hospital and infirmary, farm buildings, a cemetery and a fish pond also belonged to the hospital. The hospital was subordinate to the superior of Stephansfelden and they also had the right to visit . At the end of the 13th century, the convent was increasingly clericalized. The following hospital masters are known from the clergy : 1359 Johanssen von Lauterburg, 1404 Johann Geiersreuter, 1441 Konrad Tanner and 1512 Johann Retzer.

In 1504 the hospital with 42 houses in the suburbs was besieged by the Nuremberg people during the Landshut War of Succession and cremated by the Neumarkters themselves, as they did not want to give the enemy any cover.

The Heilig-Geist-Spital under civil administration

After long disputes with the hospital master Johann Retzer, who was described as incompetent, Count Palatine Friedrich handed the hospital over to the city in 1527 . On February 28, 1530 this was approved by Pope Clement VII ; The Colonel General of the Holy Spirit Order in Rome was ready on June 24, 1532 to transfer the hospital to the city of Neumarkt. With that the history of the religious hospital came to an end and the institution came into bourgeois hands.

Hospital and Church of St. Anna in Neumarkt (1914)

During the Thirty Years' War , the hospital, which was still outside the city walls, was burned down by Swedish troops; the new building financed by the city was then built within the city fortifications. The St. The hospital chapel, consecrated to Maria Magdalena , was given a baroque interior around 1773 .

On January 1, 1893, the facilities of the brother house, sister house and hospital were combined to form the United Charity Foundation . The building, which was later completely renovated, was destroyed in 1945. The facility called “Citizens Hospital” still exists today - purely secular - with the original foundation assets. The name Spitalgasse and a fountain are reminiscent of the former Heilig-Geist-Spital.
