history

The south wing of the monastery was built in 1861/62 together with the Church of the Conception of Mary and was used as a monastery by four sisters of the Servite Order from 1872 to 1879. In 1891 the Order of the Brothers of Mercy took over the monastery and built a nursing home. In 1911 the west wing was built. In 1929 parts of the south wing burned down, which were rebuilt and increased in 1931/32. The east wing of the monastery was added. In 1967 the nursing home was closed due to the aging of the fratres and then used as accommodation for guest workers until 1979. The Free State of Bavaria then acquired the building for use as a residence for asylum seekers . This was closed in 1996. In 2001 the Schalkham community was able to buy the building. The citizen and cultural center is now located in the west wing. Since 2007, a village shop has been operating there under the name Klosterladen Johannesbrunn .
