The monastery L'Estrée (Notre-Dame de l'Estrée; Strata) is a former Cistercian abbey in the French commune of Muzy in the Eure department , Normandy region , on the banks of the Avre river. The monastery is located around six kilometers north of Dreux , not far from the Breuil-Benoît monastery .
history
The monastery was founded in 1145 by Rahier, lord of Muzy, and Amauri, lord of Mesnil, and was occupied by monks from the Pontigny primary abbey . It fell in ruins during the Hundred Years War . In 1684 it was reoccupied with Cistercian nuns from La Colombe Monastery in Longwy . Church, cloister and various buildings were demolished in 1803. The preserved buildings were used by a printing company.
Buildings and plant
The abbot's house, a pigeon house restored in 1764, the mill and the remains of the Porte Notre-Dame have been preserved. The church of Mesnil-sur-l'Estrée contains woodwork from the 18th century and there are several capitals in the area.
