Fontclara monastery (priory)

The Lavaix (Labaix; Labaciae) monastery, first mentioned in 848, is a former Cistercian abbey in the province of Lleida (Lérida) in northeastern Spain . The plant was located in the valley of the Noguera Ribagorzana south of El Pont de Suert in the Catalan part of the Alta Ribagorça and is now sunk in the Pantà d'Escales reservoir .

history

The monastery appears as a Benedictine settlement in 947 , was converted into a canonical monastery in 1092 and became dependent on the monastery of San Genís de Bellera in 1112. The complex fell into disrepair towards the middle of the 12th century. In 1223 Pope Honorius III ordered At the request of the Bishop of Lleida, Berenguer d'Erill, the subordination to the Cistercian order, which took place in 1224, and Lavaix was now subordinate to the mother monastery Bonnefont near Saint-Gaudens in France from the filiation of the primary abbey Morimond . In 1230 a Fontclara Priory (Santa María de Fontclara) was founded in Albalate de Cinca in Aragon . An abbot house was rebuilt. The monastery was restored in the baroque era. It existed until the monastery was abolished ( disamorted ) under the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal in 1835, but the monks stayed for some time. The library was burned in the Carlist Wars in 1833. As a result, the buildings fell into disrepair. The system was flooded when the reservoir was built in 1950.

Buildings and plant

The single-nave, cross-shaped church with three semicircular apses and a low transept and the enclosure were rebuilt in the 12th century; in the baroque era the central apse was replaced by a rectangular, closed presbytery. The cloister was to the south of the church, which was adjacent to the mountainside. Remnants of the architectural jewelry and capitals can be seen. a. preserved in El Pont de Suert and in various museums. When the tide is low, remains of the system are visible.
