The Meira Monastery (Santa María de Meira) is a former Cistercian abbey in Galicia in Spain . It is located in the Concello Meira in the comarca of the same name in the province of Lugo, around 34 km north-northeast of Lugo on the main road (N 640) to Castropol , near the origin of the Rio Miño .
history
The Cistercian monastery was founded in 1143 as a subsidiary of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . It received foundations from the kings Alfonso VII , Ferdinand II and Alfons IX. In 1515 it joined the Castilian Cistercian Congregation. In the 17th century a higher philosophical school was established with him. The abolition of the monastery by the Mendizábal government in 1835 brought the monastery to an end. The church (now the parish church) has been a national monument since 1931.
Buildings and plant
The construction of the church, built in the Burgundian Romanesque style and preserved in its original form, with a large rose window and a round arched portal in the western front, began around 1185. The church was consecrated in 1258. The construction essentially follows the Bernardine plan. However, it has a small tower on the south side of the facade. The nave has three naves with nine bays each with a pointed barrel in the central nave and groin vaults in the aisles. Two side chapels adjoin the transept in the east. The main choir is closed in a semicircle.
Vaults are still visible from the cloister on the south side of the church. To the west of the church are two wings of another courtyard from the 16th century, which are used by the community.
