The Ripalta di Puglia Monastery (S. Maria di Ripalta di Puglia) is a former Cistercian monastery in the Puglia region , Italy .
location
The monastery was 7 km from Lesina in the province of Foggia on the right bank of the Fortore River on a small hill called Ripalta, in the former diocese of Civitate, which was merged with the newly founded one of San Severo in 1580 .
history
The monastery already existed as a Benedictine monastery before it was incorporated into the Cistercian order . 1201 took a convent Kloster Casanova (Abruzzo) the convent in possession, the order that the Filiation the Branch Clairvaux belonged. It is not known whether the Cistercians rebuilt the church or adapted an existing one to their requirements, but architectural details speak for a Cistercian building. Plant and buildings
Only the church remains of the monastery, probably originally in the form of a Latin cross with a square apse with three lancet windows and calyx-bud capitals as well as leaf capitals in the interior in the Bernardine plan, which has been reduced from three naves to one nave and which is used as a parish church for the small settlement that has developed around the former monastery serves.
