Monastery of San Pastore , the 576th medieval monastic abbey of the order, was a Cistercian monastery in the municipality of Greccio in Lazio , Italy .

history

church

The monastery was near Rieti in the province of the same name . The monks of the monastery of San Matteo di Montecchio near Rieti asked in 1218 to join the Cistercian order. A convent from Casanova Monastery (Abruzzo) undertook the reform of the monastery, which thus belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . Because of the swampy and feverish terrain, the abbey was soon relocated (around 1236) to the church of San Pastore in Greccio , which was acquired by the monastery of San Benedetto de Fundis and only a few kilometers away . The establishment of the new San Pastore Abbey lasted until 1255 (controversial). The monastery flourished for over 200 years and then fell into the coming years and was abandoned at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1580 the Commendatar Abbot Cardinal Colonna settled some Canon Regulars who stayed for about 100 years. In 1834 the Apostolic Chamber sold the monastery complex, which later fell into ruins, to the Merchesi Potenziani from Rieti. Today the abbey houses a restaurant for wedding celebrations and banquets.

The architecture of the church is based on the construction of the Rieti Cathedral. It is a cruciform basilica with a three-aisled nave with 5 bays, transept and rectangular choir. The chapter house, parlatorium, monks' hall and refectory as well as part of the cloister have been preserved from the cloister buildings.
