history

Aerial view of the monastery

The monastery was founded in 1298 by Jacob (Jaime) II of Aragón and was occupied by monks from the Santes Creus monastery . So it belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . In 1381 Valldigna founded the monastery of Sant Bernat de Rascanya (initially priory) in Valencia , which later joined the Order of the Hieronymites under the name of Sant Miquel dels Reis. The Gothic building suffered severe damage in earthquakes in 1396 and 1644. The current church comes from the baroque reconstruction. In the course of the abolition of the monastery by the Mendizábal government , the monastery was dissolved in 1835. Parts of the monastery were sold as building materials.
