Santa Maria dello Sterpeto Monastery was a Cistercian monk abbey in Puglia , Italy . It was about 3 km east of Barletta in the metropolitan city of Bari on the road to Trani .

history

In the Benedictine monastery , which probably dates back to the 12th century , a Byzantine icon of Mary was venerated, which probably goes back to an earlier Basilian monastery . In 1258 Pope Alexander IV ordered that Santa Maria dello Sterpeto should be incorporated into the Cistercian order. This happened at the general chapter in 1259. The monastery was subordinated to the mother monastery Arabona and thus belonged to the filiation of the primary abbey of Clairvaux . In 1348 the monastery was looted and the monks withdrew to the mother monastery of Arabona. The church fell into disrepair. In 1374 the monastery became a grangie of the Arabona monastery. This was united with the Apostles' Basilica in Rome in 1587. Rectors of Sterpeto were secular clerics, Benedictines from Monte Cassino and Minorites . In 1732 a new church was built, which was enlarged in 1837 and developed into a place of pilgrimage. An attempt made by Casamari Monastery in 1935 to revive the Cistercian monastery failed after 15 years. In 1951, St. Joseph's Oblates settled in the former monastery. The new sanctuary was built from 1968 to 1977, while the old one was restored in 1999.

Plant and buildings

The old and new sanctuary are located on the site of the monastery.
