St. Apollinaris Monastery (Obermichelbach)

The St. Apollinaris Monastery was a Benedictine monastery near Obermichelbach in Alsace.

history

Founded in 1140 by the Counts of Pfirt as a monastery, it was taken over by Benedictine nuns in 1238. The Bishop of Basel found the monastery neglected and asked for help in Rome, so that Mychelenbach was subordinated to the Cistercians of the Wettingen monastery . Since it was too far away for effective supervision, it was placed under the control of Lützel Monastery in 1253 . In the fourteenth century the name monastery “St. Apollinaris ”. It was a station for pilgrims to Ravenna. A legend tells of a fountain with miraculous water.

In 1797 the monastery was closed and the buildings sold. A statue of St. Apollinaris in Obermichelbach is said to have been preserved from the monastery ; the stones were used to build the church.
