The St. Josef Monastery is located on Hellbrunnerstraße 14 in the Nonntal district in the city of Salzburg . The name was derived from the nearest Gutshof St. Josef in the Josefiau district . The convent was run by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd . These sisters are committed to helping people who are on the fringes of society or who are in need, especially women and girls.

history

In 1878 Theresia von Piller approached Prince Archbishop Franz Albert Eder with the request to found a refuge for women in Salzburg , and a small refuge was temporarily opened on the Nonnberg as early as January 6, 1880 . In addition, the property of the former Lanzer Hof in Hellbrunnerstrasse was acquired and in September 1882 the estate was ready to move into. The foundation stone for the church was laid on March 27, 1884; on June 17, 1886, the Herz-Mariä Church was inaugurated by Prince Archbishop Albert Eder.

The building in Nonntal was built in 1885 by Walter Demel according to plans by Valentin Ceconi .

In addition to a house for women and girls ( a rescue facility for neglected girls , as it is called in the annual report of 1883), a private elementary school was opened here on September 16, 1908 under the direction of the sisters. On September 23, 1935, a housekeeping school was also established.

During the Second World War , the St. Josef House was closed on October 17, 1938 and converted into a reserve hospital. The returning hospital was closed after the end of the war on January 1, 1947 and the house was returned to the order; In 1949 the housekeeping school reopened. In 1949 the elementary school was also reopened (which was converted into a secondary school in 1978), and a training workshop for women’s dressmakers, lingerie manufacturers and ironers was set up (closed in 1991). In 1976 a kindergarten was set up and the agriculture that had been in operation until then was closed. On September 14, 1983, the Contemplative Sisters left the monastery and moved to Baumgartenberg Abbey .

St. Peter's Monastery in the present

In 1991 the training workshop for women’s dressmakers is closed and the kindergarten is handed over to lay workers. In 1992 the socio-educational girls' home is also closed. The vacated rooms are rented to the Catholic University Community (KHG) and the student residence “St. Josef “is founded.

A business school was set up in the former monastery buildings in 2000/01 and the “two-year business school” trial began in 2001/2002. In 2003/2004 a school for medical administration was opened here and in 2004/2005 the beginning of the school experiment “One-year business school model St. Josef”. In 2009/2010 a higher education institute for business professions begins with a focus on "medical administration".

Before the summer of 2020, all the sisters will have moved to Baumgartenberg Abbey. The school will be retained, but the structure will be relocated to the north wing of the former monastery. The property was probably taken over by Marriott International , serviced and furnished condominiums are to be built. A hotel in the sense of the Autograph Collection is also to be built.
