Foundation charter dated March 20, 1212, confirmed by Otto IV at the Frankfurt Reichstag

The monastery of St. Thomas (after the Apostle Thomas ) was the second oldest monastery in Leipzig and works through the tradition of St. Thomas Church , -School and St. Thomas Boys Choir continues to this day.

history

The monastery was founded as a canon of the Augustinian order in 1212 by the margrave Dietrich von Meißen . The later St. Thomas Church, which had long functioned as a market church, was given to the monastery as a collegiate church in 1213. The Nikolaikirche , the Georgenhospital and other properties were also given to the monastery.

The minstrel Heinrich von Morungen , who according to tradition is said to have brought a relic of St. Thomas with him from India , entered the monastery at the time. After the townspeople had opposed the land transfer, Dietrich felt compelled to force the town to recognize the status quo through conquest and reprisals in 1217 , which was also introduced by Emperor Otto IV and Pope Honorius III in 1220 . has been confirmed.

In the course of the Reformation the monastery was secularized in 1541 , as a result of which the property fell to the Saxon court. The city of Leipzig bought it from him. The monastery buildings were subsequently demolished to obtain building land.

location

The monastery complex was located on the site north of the Thomaskirche, which stretched almost to today's Matthäikirchhof.
