Tavna Monastery

The Tavna Monastery ( Serbian Манастир Тавна, Manastir Tavna as) Sveta Trojca known is located in the southern part of the Municipality of Bijeljina and one of the oldest buildings of Semberija in Bosnia and Herzegovina . The monastery is said to have been built by Dragutin's sons Vladislav and Uroš during his reign. Dragutin was the king of Serbia , the region around Bijeljina at that time belonged to his territory until 1316.

The monastery was badly damaged in the first years of the medieval Turkish occupation , the damage was later repaired. In the course of the Ottoman occupation, the monastery was further damaged. During the Second World War , Tavna Monastery was repeatedly attacked and bombed by the Ustaša , a fascist movement of Croatian extremists led by Ante Pavelić .

On a tombstone in the immediate vicinity of the monastery is written “Zdravko Jovanović, killed in 1943 by the Ustaša blue division while defending the monastery”. After the Second World War, the monastery was rebuilt. Today it is considered the spiritual center of the local Serbian Orthodox Christians in the region and is also a building frequently visited by tourists.
