Stefan Dragutin (* around 1252 ; † March 12, 1316 in the Đurđevi Stupovi monastery) was the Serbian king from 1276 to 1282 .

Life

Stefan Dragutin the son of Stefan Uroš I and his wife Hélène von Anjou . Stefan Dragutin was married to Katalina from the house of the Hungarian Árpá . Her father was Stephan V , King of Hungary . When Stefan Uroš I led a campaign against Hungary in 1269 and was defeated by them, Dragutin was appointed co-regent of his father under pressure from Hungary. In 1275 Stefan Uroš I tried to conquer the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa). With the help of Hungary and the Republic of Dubrovnik, Dragutin gathered an army and overthrew his father in 1276. In Serbia, excessive Hungarian influence or even the annexation of Serbia to Hungary was feared, which is why the Serbian Imperial Assembly deposed Stefan Dragutin in 1282 and his younger brother Stefan Uroš II. Milutin was enthroned.

After his deposition in 1282, Stefan Dragutin remained ruler in the northern areas of Serbia and, due to his family ties to the Hungarian royal house of Belgrade and Syrmia , got the Banate and Osora in eastern Bosnia , where he ruled until 1316. Together with Milutin, he conquered parts of eastern Serbia. Stefan Dragutin retired as a Teoctist monk in the Đurđevi Stupovi monastery (Đurđev's pillars) near Ras , where he died in 1316. His son Stefan Vladislav felt like a Hungarian Anjou and gave his kingdom back to the Hungarian crown, but Stefan Uroš II Milutin conquered the southern areas.
