Semberija

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Semberija (Cyrillic Семберија) is a geographical region around the city of Bijeljina in the northeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is bordered by the Sava and Drina rivers and the Majevica Mountains and is characterized by plains that are used intensively for agriculture.

Surname

Semberija is a landscape name for the area that never formed an administrative unit under this name and therefore rarely appears in written sources. There are several theories about the origin of the name, but it is said to have originated in the 16th century at the earliest, when numerous Wlachs settled in the region, and indicates their social and economic situation as a whole or the situation of a smaller group of serfs ( sebar or sember ) among them.

geography

The Semberija is a plain in the extreme northeast of Bosnia , between the Sava rivers in the north and the Drina in the east and bordered by the Majevica Mountains in the west. It is part of the Pannonian Plain . The southern border is less clearly defined and is generally equated with the municipal border between Bijeljina and Zvornik . The region now belongs entirely to the Republika Srpska and is also predominantly inhabited by Serbs .
