The Val-Richer Monastery (Vallis Richerii or Souleuvre) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Saint-Ouen-le-Pin in the Calvados department of Normandy ( France ). It is about eleven kilometers west of Lisieux .
history
The monastery was founded around 1143 by Philippe de Harcourt, the Bishop of Bayeux , and was initially occupied by monks from the Mortemer monastery , who are said to have withdrawn to Mortemer soon. The second settlement took place in 1150 by monks who soon abandoned a foundation in Vaux-de-Souleuvre. After the monastery suffered from the wars of the 14th and 15th centuries, it was in 1539 Upcoming . It was looted twice during the Huguenot Wars . It was then restored. Around 1650 the rule of the monastery was reformed in the sense of strict observance (see La Trappe monastery ). As abbot, Dominique Georges spread the Cistercian reform until his death in 1693. When the revolution broke out , which ended the monastery in 1791, six monks were still living there. The church, cloister and convent building were demolished in 1802. The complex was acquired in 1836 by the politician and historian François Guizot , who had it restored and created a park.
