The Cistercian Abbey of La Trappe (Latin Abbatia BM de Trappa ; French Abbey Notre Dame de la Trappe ) is located in the French commune of Soligny-la-Trappe in the Orne department , about four kilometers northeast of the town center.

history

Abbot Armand Jean Le Bouthillier de Rancé

The monastery was founded by Rotrou III. , Count of Perche, founded in 1122 and has been Cistercian since 1147, when the Congregation of Savigny joined the Cistercian order. In the 16th century it fell into the coming period , which resulted in a decline. The last abbot, Armand de Rancé , was surprisingly converted and decided to renew the monastic life there. La Trappe then belonged to a Cistercian reform movement of the "strict observance", which in 1892 founded its own order. Due to the great influence of Rancé, the new order was initially called the " Trappist Order " after the La Trappe monastery. The monastery was closed during the French Revolution in 1790, but during the Restoration in 1815 it was repopulated by monks who fled abroad.

Buildings and plant

The guest wing has been preserved from the medieval complex. The abbot's house was built in 1680. The other buildings, including the church, were built in the neo-Gothic style in the 19th century. The monastery is listed as a monument historique .
