The Valbonne Monastery (Monastir de Vallbona; Vallis bona; not to be confused with the Cistercian Monastery of Vallbona in Catalonia ) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Argelès-sur-Mer in the Pyrénées-Orientales department , Occitania region , in France . It was located in the Massif des Albères about 34 km southeast of Perpignan .

history

The monastery, founded in 1242 by monks from Fontfroide Monastery, belonged to the Filiation of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The valley in which the monastery is located belonged to the Sant-Quirc de Colera Monastery in Spain , which sold it to the Fontfroide Abbey. The convent never had much more than 12 monks. In 1293, King James II of Mallorca gave the monastery grazing rights in the entire valley. From the 15th to the 16th centuries, the monks left the monastery and settled in the Hospital of St. Guillaume in Perpignan, but returned later until they finally left the monastery in 1734. The monastery was dissolved in 1791 during the French Revolution .

Buildings and plant

Only small remains of the complex have survived that belong to the Mas de Vallbona property, namely remains of the walling with a round tower and the monastery church, whose cross-vaulted, 16 m long nave is the only one that has been preserved. The foundations are visible from the east-facing semicircular apse . Remnants of the plastic jewelry are also preserved.
