The Vallbona de les Monges Monastery (also: Santa María de Vallbona de Les Monges ; Latin Abbatia BMV de Vallebona ; not to be confused with the Cistercian Abbey of Valbonne in Roussillon ) is an existing Cistercian abbey in the region of Catalonia in Spain . It is located in Vallbona de Les Monges in the Lleida Province . With the monastic abbeys of Santes Creus and Poblet , it forms the Catalan Ruta del Cister .

history

The monastery was donated in 1173 by Ramón Berenguer IV on the site of a Benedictine complex for monks and nuns from 1055 . It was declared a national monument in 1932. The monastery quickly gained influence and attracted noble women from Catalonia. In the years 1198 and 1200 was him by Pope Innocent III. granted immunity. Since 1380 the abbess was also mistress of the county of Vallbona. In its heyday, the monastery had 150 nuns. The decline began in the 15th century. The disaster in Spain , the abolition of the monastery during the reign of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal , only interrupted monastic life for a short time. In recent years the Generalitat de Catalunya has undertaken restoration work.

Buildings and plant

The single-nave, cross-shaped church, as is often the case in women's cisterns, has a rectangular main apse and two one-bay cross arms as well as a four-bay nave. The octagonal bell tower is built over the second nave yoke. The enclosure is to the right of the church; the west arm of the cloister with low arcades is offset to the west on the south side. The complex is built in the Romanesque-Gothic style.

Tombs of the Royal House of Aragón

Several members of the royal family are buried in Vallbona (for details see article Ruta del Cister ).
