The monastery church is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Oschatz and is the only remaining structure of the former Franciscan monastery . Located in the inner city ring, remnants of the city wall can still be seen in the western part of the monastery churchyard.

history

The brothers of the Franciscan Order , established in 1210, came to Oschatz in 1228 and founded a convent , which was first mentioned in 1240 and which belonged to the Saxon Franciscan Province ( Saxonia ). The monastery church was built between 1246 and 1248. It was consecrated to the Virgin Mary on the Sunday before Midsummer 1248 . Pope Innocent IV and Bishop Conrad von Meißen granted indulgences to the supporters of the church building and to the participants in the church consecration .

In 1429 the monastery and the city of Oschatz were destroyed by the Hussites . In 1430 the reconstruction of the monastery began. In 1484 the monastery church was consecrated. In 1539 Duke Heinrich closed the monastery as a result of the Reformation . The church was now only partially used for church purposes. Among other things, it served as a warehouse, hospital and riding hall for the Uhlans .

In 1924 the eastern part was separated from the nave, a false ceiling was put in and a community hall was set up on the upper floor. Community rooms were created on the ground floor. The nave has been used for storage purposes ever since.
