Klout was a San Francisco- based company (Klout Inc.), which based on the analysis of social networks (for example: Twitter and Facebook ) created a rating of users (influence).

It was therefore a largely fully automatic electronic service for measuring the online influence (quantitative, not qualitative) of people. The algorithms that Klout uses to create a person's influence were not public.

Klout has been owned by Lithium Technologies since 2014 .

In May 2018, Klout announced that it would cease operations on May 25, 2018. The closure had been planned for some time and had been accelerated by the entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation .

Klout Score

The Klout scale (Klout Score) ranges from 1 to 100 and is intended to reflect and document a person's "online influence" (maximum value 100). Example: Barack Obama has a Klout Score of 99. According to the Klout website, the average “Klout Score” is 40.

method

Klout supposedly evaluates, among other things, the number of friends, the activities and the number of recommendations in various social networks. The fewer activities and the lower the reaction to these activities, the lower the Klout score will be.

To what extent search engines will use the social network and Klout as relevance providers for their own scores in the future is not yet foreseeable.

Microsoft integrated Klout's rating system into Bing in September 2012 . Since then, to the right of the search results, people have been shown who are potentially particularly well versed in the topic they are looking for and who also have a high Klout Score .

Klout Perks

Klout Perks are rewards for social activities. Interested companies can present particularly attractive users with special offers and probably want to benefit from the high social status of these users on the Internet in this way. These offers are currently aimed primarily at users in the USA. To receive Klout Perks, the user has to give Klout their address.

criticism

  • By measuring the quantity of activity on social networks by Klout, quality is largely neglected.
  • Klout also measures the score of people who are not registered.
  • Klout also evaluates non-existent people ( pseudonyms ) if they appear on the web. Klout does not recognize a pseudepigraphy . The registration at Klout takes place only with a working e-mail address, which is not verified personally .
  • Due to the unknown ratings and the focus on the English-speaking network, Klout is not representative of the real influence of a person in the Internet community.
