Characters

Lyle Lion

As a passive and insecure mothers son, Lyle the lion is not what you could call the "king of the jungle". He's more intent on talking about philosophy and ordering a preferably vegetarian pizza than being the ruling predator. His main goal in life is to win Lana over, although he has already failed several times. Besides that, he aspires to be an astronomer.

Dodo

He's the last remaining dodo and Lyle's best friend. He has a rash, is impatient and slightly self-centered, is extremely hot-headed and refuses to believe that he lacks the ability to fly. This leads to several failed attempts to escape, sometimes with innovative and unusual techniques.

Eugene

Despite its size and nature, the elephant behaves like an oversized baby that craves attention. He's quite arrogant and obnoxious and doesn't shy away from intimidating others with his size and strength when he tries to bully them. Some of his secret joys include inhaling peanut butter and mashing petunias , but the sight of a little mouse makes him panic.

gnu

For the leader of a herd, wildebeest lack any leadership qualities. He is lazy, scared and has no sense of direction. In spite of this, wildebeest is good-natured and cares very much about his herd, although he hinders rather than supports them. He is also a caring mother substitute as he is the single father of a son he is very fond of.

Lana

The lioness is smart, attractive, strong-willed, and the object of Lyle's affection. Lana looks after her roommates in Freeborn and will put the well-being of her group above her own. She is also an avid book lover and often pokes her nose into a novel. While she shows little to no interest in Lyle's endeavors, it is suggested that she may have had an eye on him.

reception

The San Francisco Chronicle described Animal Crackers as "a snappy little one-frame strip [that] featured a variety of animals in various stupid situations that can happen to humans." animal life dealing with various silly situations of a human nature ”) and as a comic strip“ whose sale to several newspapers continues to be popular ”.

Award

Roger Bollen and Knallfroschs Freunde received the Max and Moritz Prize in 1986 for the best international comic strip artist.
