The surgical saw is a medical instrument for cutting through hard substances. It is one of the oldest surgical instruments, but is still used today, especially in orthopedics , neurosurgery , pathology and veterinary medicine . Saws are used to cut through bones ( osteotomy ) and to open the cranial cavity ( craniotomy ), in veterinary medicine also for sawing off horns and for dividing dead fetuses in the womb ( fetotomy ). In addition, saws can also be used to remove seemingly bandages ( plaster cast , cast ) (“plaster saw”).

Hand saws, wire saws and electrically or pneumatically driven oscillating saws are used .
