Knock Ullinish

The inside of Knock Ullinish

The basement of Knock Ullinish is located near Loch Bracadale on the Isle of Skye in the Council Area Highland in Scotland . In the case of the basement, a basic distinction is made between "rock-cut", "earth-cut", "stone built" and "mixed" basements.

The partially destroyed basement - also known as the Earthhouse - is located on the rough, rocky heather moor , about 400 m west of the point where the road to Ullinish Lodge branches off from the road from Dunvegan to Struanmore. The preserved part consists of an approximately straight, narrow corridor that is roughly north-east-south-west oriented. The side walls of dry masonry (stone built) on which the flat cover stones lie, which is about 30 cm of soil are covered, are well preserved. The corridor is about 6 m long and at the entrance, in the southwest, about 1.2 m high and 0.8 m wide. It expands inside to 1.8 m. The walls protrude slightly inwards so that a trapezoidal cross-section results. There is evidence that the southern extension was S-curve. The inner end of the corridor may have been in the shape of an oval or round room, as there is a deep hole at the northern end, which is surrounded by offset stones. However, this part of the complex is very confusing and there are numerous remains of old houses and enclosures .

Nearby are the Ullinish Point enclosure, and the Chambered Cairns Cnoc Ullinish and Struanmore.
