Knudtzon (family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Knudtzon is the name of a Norwegian family who owned several important trading companies in the 19th century .

history

The progenitor of the Knudtzon family is Nicolai Knudtzon (1698–1785) from Bredsted in southern Schleswig , whose sons Nicolai Heinrich and Hans Carl Knudtzon came to Norway in the second half of the 18th century.

Hans Carl Knudtzon came to Trondheim in 1767 to do an apprenticeship with the merchant Broder Brodersen Lysholm , who was also from Schleswig . After his death in 1772, his daughter Catharina Lysholm inherited the company and made Knudtzon her partner. After Lysholm withdrew from the business, Knudtzon was finally the sole owner of the company from 1797, which at the beginning of the 19th century owned more than 20 ships with which it traded worldwide. The company also held shares in the Trondheim shipyard, the Trondheim sugar factory and the copper mines in Røros and Kvikne . Knudtzon was also mayor of Trondheim and a member of the Storting . After his death, his sons Christian and Broder Knudtzon continued to run the company.

His younger brother Nicolai Heinrich Knudtzon also first came to Trondheim, where he became a citizen in 1784 and worked as a representative of German companies. Four years later he moved to Kristiansund , where he managed the fish shop for the native Scotsman William Leslie until 1802 and at the same time built up his own business. This made him one of the richest merchants in town. In 1814 he retired from the business. His company was continued by two of his sons. Other sons founded their own companies.

The descendants of the brothers Hans Carl and Nicolai Heinrich Knudtzon included merchants as well as several politicians and consuls , the art collector and patron Jørgen von Cappelen Knudtzon , the doctor Christian Frederik Knudtzon and the linguist Jørgen Alexander Knudtzon .
