Broder Knudtzon

Broder Lysholm Knudtzon (born October 5, 1788 in Trondheim , † March 20, 1864 in Trondheim) was a Norwegian businessman, politician and patron.

Life

His parents were the businessman Hans Carl Knudtzon (1751-1823) and his wife Karen Müller (1752-1818). He grew up in Trondheim and from 1796 in Flensburg . After his confirmation he moved back to Trondheim. He was an apprentice to his father for a short time before traveling to Nantes in 1807 to visit his sister. Then he traveled through Europe and tried to train a businessman. In Paris he met the Danish poet Adam Oehlenschläger .

In the autumn of 1808 he moved to England, where he acquired a good knowledge of the English language and culture. In England he also met Lord Byron and many other key figures in the national liberal movement. Knudtzon spent the spring of 1814 in London with his brother Jørgen von Cappelen Knudtzon . There they supported Carsten Anker in his efforts to get English support for an independent Norway. In the autumn of the same year he accompanied his father to Stockholm as a member of the Storting delegation . After the death of his father, he became a co-owner of the family business, but left its management to his brother Christian and his brother-in-law Lorentz Johannsen . He himself represented the company abroad. In 1820 he wrote: “ Business I hate, and for reading there is not leisure.

In 1833 he was elected as a deputy in the Storting . In the years 1839-1857 he sat on the board of directors of Norges Bank . He was also a member of the learned society Det Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab from 1821 and served as its secretary from 1825 to 1831. With the help of his friends in England, he made books available to society, including on political economy . After his death he bequeathed part of his own library and some works of art by Bertel Thorvaldsen to the learned society.
