Knut Vaage (born October 14, 1961 in Bergen (Norway) ) is a Norwegian composer .

biography

Vaage received his education at the Bergen Music Conservatory, where he studied piano, music education and composition. He attended master classes with Helmut Lachenmann , George Crumb , Salvatore Sciarrino and Brian Ferneyhough, among others . Between 1995 and 1997 he was a private student with Hans Abrahamsen in Copenhagen . In 2003 Knut Vaage received his official qualification as a composition lecturer and is currently working as a freelance composer in Bergen.

Vaage was a member of two music collectives: One of them was called "Avgarde", a gathering of musicians and composers around Ketil Hvoslef , the youngest son of the symphonic composer Harald Sæverud . Musical results of “Avgarde” can be found on the CD of the same name by pianist Einar Røttingen , who was also a member and recorded piano works resulting from the meeting. The other collective was called "Ny Musikk", which Knut Vaage led at times. Vaage makes it his business to bring contemporary music closer to a broader spectrum of listeners, for which purpose he also wrote works for children and young people and participated in or initiated various projects.

music

Knut Vaage composes music for various types of instrumentation from solo works to large-scale orchestral works and operas. His first work in opera is one of his greatest successes to date: It is the opera Nokon kjem til å komm (Somebody will come) from 2000, based on the play of the same name by Jon Fosse, which has now been translated into three languages . This was followed by the vocal work Høgsongen for soloists, choir and orchestra, then the operas Khairos and Veslefrikk . Knut Vaage's music is performed regularly, mostly in Norway or Germany. Einar Røttingen, Eivind Gullberg Jensen and Eivind Aadland deserve special mention among the musicians who support Knut Vaage's music .

As a composer, Knut Vaage explores the boundaries between improvised and composed music, creating free and unbounded effects. He incorporates new stylistic elements such as clusters or passages without a beat into his music as well as electronic amplification and distortion of the sound. Abrupt breaks and surprises characterize Vaage's works; The composer describes the musical dialogue as the primary element in his music, with the help of which an organic structure is created.
