Koei ( Japanese 株式会社 コ ー エ ー , Kabushiki kaisha Kōē ) is a Japanese manufacturer of video games . Koei is known for its historical simulation games based on the novel The Tale of the Three Realms .

The company has also had commercial success with a number of conditionally historic action games such as Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors .

history

Koei was founded in June 1978 by Yoichi Erikawa and his wife Keiko. The company has been based in Yokohama since then . The company initially focused on personal computers and business software . In 1983 Nobunaga's Ambition was released, a strategy game set against the backdrop of the Sengoku era . The game won several awards, and Koei subsequently released several other historical games, including Romance of the Three Kingdoms , set during the Three Kingdoms Period .

In 1988 a subsidiary was established in North America, Koei Corporation , based in California. The subsidiary developed its own games until 1995, after which it was limited to the translation of the parent company's games.

In 2001 a branch in Canada, Koei Canada Inc, and in 2003 a branch in Europe, Koei Limited , was established.

On September 4, 2008, Koei announced that it was in talks about the purchase of the competing company Tecmo . In November 2008 it was decided to merge the two companies. The merger was completed on April 1, 2009, whereby Koei became a subsidiary of the new Koei Tecmo Holdings .
