Coal sieves

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kohlensiepen is one of seven districts of the Witten district of Annen . It bears the identification number 45. On December 31, 2018, it had a total of 1991 inhabitants.

Surname

Kohlensiepen owes its name to various sources. So there is the word Siepen in Middle High German , which means, among other things, “humid Bachtal”. In fact, there was a stream in Kohlensiepen, but it has disappeared due to mining .

The term "coal" has nothing to do with coal , which used to be mined in Witten, but is derived from "kahl". So it was a bare Siepen, a treeless valley. Until the 1950s, mainly agriculture was practiced in this part of the village , from the end of the 1960s there was increased development , today a large part of the valley is mainly built with one and two-family houses.

District confusion

If you ask someone from Witten whether the area that includes the coal-sieving area is an independent district, the answer will probably be "no". The Borbach flows through the area . In colloquial language, this also serves as the place name for the district as "Borbach" or "Borbachtal". But neither of these two names matches the official markings of the city of Witten. There is no district called "Borbach" in the district. Before the municipal reform of 1929, Kohlensiepen belonged to the Annen office belonging to the Hörde district . It was not until 1929 that Annen became a district of Witten, with which Kohlensiepen also fell to Witten, but ultimately continues to be run as a district of Annen in the districts.
