Koya ( Kurdish کۆیە Koye , Arabic كوية Kuya ), also Koy Sandschaq (كوي سنجق, DMG Kūy Sanǧaq , from Turkish Köysancak ) or Koy for short , is a city and a district in the Erbil Governorate in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region , Iraq .
The city has a population of 44,987 people, the majority of whom are Kurds (2009 calculation). Koy is also called the “city of artists” because many famous Kurdish artists were born there, including the author of the Kurdish hymn Ey Reqîb Dildar .
Furthermore, the city has been the seat of the Koya University since 2003 .
