Koizumi Shinzō ( Japanese 小泉 信 三 ; born May 4, 1888 in Tōkyō ; died May 11, 1966 ibid) was a Japanese economist.

Live and act

Koizumi Shinzō was the son of the entrepreneur Koizumi Nobukichi (小泉 信 吉; 1853-1894). He was President of Keiō University and Manager of Yokohama Specie Bank . Son Shinzō met at a young age through his father Fukuzawa Yukichi . He graduated from Keiō University in 1910. While he was teaching there, he trained under Fukuda Tokuzō in economics.

From 1913 to 1916 Koizumi stayed in Europe and attended universities in England, France and Germany. After his return he became a professor at Keiō University. From 1933 to 1947 he served as president of the university. After the Pacific War Koizumi worked as a teacher to the young Crown Prince and later Emperor Akihito .

As a specialist in economic history and well versed in social issues, he was initially a critic of Marx's ideas. After studying the ideas intensively, he was later in a milder mood. He was well versed in the life and work of the reformer Fukuzawa Yukichi. In 1959 Koizumi was honored as a person with special cultural merits and awarded the Order of Culture .

Koizumi's writings include “Fifty Years After the Death of Marx” from 1933 and “A Study on Ricardo” a year later, which deals with the British economist David Ricardo . From 1967 to 1972 the "Collected Writings of Koizumi Shinzō" (小泉 信 三 全集; Koizumi Shinō zenshū) were published in 28 volumes. Volumes 25 to 27 are collections of letters (書簡 集, Shokan-shū), the last volume contains photos and memories.

Koizumi, himself a tennis player, saw a Wimbledon tournament during his stay in England and came into contact with the multiple champion Anthony Wilding . He sent him his book "On the Court and Off".

Remarks

  1. The Yokohama Specie Bank later became the Bank of Tōkyō. This in turn joined forces with other banks to form Mitsubishi Tōkyō UFJ Ginkō .
