Overview

The collection was founded by two former students of Lafcadio Hearns , Ochiai Teizaburō and Kishi Seiichi . In 1927, they donated a small collection of 22 manuscripts from Hearns to the memorial, which was soon expanded to include a donation of 350 books by the “Society in Memory of Koizumi Yakumo”. The memorial itself was initially set up in a new building on the western side of the house in which Lafcadio Hearn, newlyweds, lived from May to November 1891. The building is designed as a single-storey wooden building. The memorial was officially opened in 1933. Although the plans for the old Yamaguchi Bunzō memorial included a western-style house based on the Weimar memorial, the conversion was implemented in 1984 in the Japanese style. The memorial has a floor area of 162.3 m². Today, the collection includes over 1,000 exhibits such as manuscripts , books and materials from the legacy of Hearns and his wife.

The management is incumbent on the "Working Group for Tourism" ( ツ ー リ ズ ム 研究 会 , Tsūrizumu kenkyūkai ) as a legal person.
