The South Korean company Kokam Co., Ltd. based in Siheung was founded in 1989 and today manufactures both production technology for lithium polymer batteries and batteries itself. Kokam also manufactures polarized film manufacturing equipment for use in liquid crystal display (LCD) devices .

history

The development of lithium polymer batteries together with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology began in 1998. As early as 1999, mass production of the polymer battery with the name "SLPB" (Superior Lithium Polymer Battery) started. In 2002 the new technology was patented worldwide. In the same year, a team whose car used a Kokam battery won the International SUZUKA Solar Car Race in Japan.

Applications of the batteries

Kokam batteries are used in mobile communication devices ( cell phones , PDAs, etc.), power tools, as well as in cars and motorcycles. Batteries from Kokam are used in particular for electrically powered two-wheelers with a high output (e.g. in the motorcycles of the Swiss company Quantya ). An electric aircraft from Eviation Aircraft is equipped with Kokam batteries.

In addition, the Li-ion cells are increasingly being used in photovoltaic battery storage systems from Akasol and in applications for buses and trams.
