The Akasol AG (proper spelling AKASOL) is a manufacturer of battery systems for vehicles. The systems are used in battery buses , industrial and commercial vehicles , ships and rail vehicles . Akasol was founded in 2008 and is headquartered in Darmstadt .
history
Today's Akasol AG emerged from the Academic Solar Technology Group of the Technical University of Darmstadt , which was founded in 1990 . In 1990, the student group developed the Pinky solar racing car , which won three world championship titles for solar vehicles . The resulting research group created the Chili solar car in 1993 , which was equipped with a nickel-cadmium battery and had a range of 100 kilometers. In 1999, the Akabine electric vehicle followed as a result of four years of research . It was the most economical electric vehicle at the time, with a range of 300 kilometers. Based on this, Akasol developed the electric car OScar (Open Source Car). The two-seater, powered by a 250 kilogram battery, also had a range of 300 kilometers at a top speed of 130 km / h and had an energy requirement of one liter of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers.
In 2008, members of the registered association Akasol and the Schulz Group founded the commercial company Akasol Engineering GmbH . As a subsidiary of the Schulz Group, the company was involved in the development of lithium-ion battery systems. The stated goals were to reduce the cost of batteries and to have an electric car suitable for everyday use. In 2012 the company was renamed Akasol GmbH. In June 2018, the company was converted into a stock corporation, which has been listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in the Prime Standard since June 29, 2018 .

Akasol produces compact and lightweight lithium-ion battery modules with liquid cooling, extended service life and high energy density for manufacturers of vehicles with hybrid and electric drives , regenerative energy systems and energy suppliers . The most important areas of application are electric buses such as the eCitaro from EvoBus . The company has equipped several electric buses in Cologne and other German cities with batteries. Other fields of application are other commercial vehicles , work machines , rail vehicles and yachts . One example is the Alstom Coradia iLINT , a railway - transport - railcar with electricity from hydrogen through the fuel cell . Lithium-ion batteries with 110 kWh and manufactured by Akasol are housed under the passenger compartment as buffer storage .
In the Hessian Langen Akasol has built the largest European factory battery system for electric commercial vehicles. Lithium-ion battery systems for electric buses have been produced here since November 2017. The factory was supported in part with funds from a public innovation loan. Due to existing large orders, a quick expansion is considered possible. The production capacities in Darmstadt were also expanded in 2017. From 2012 Akasol participated in the federally funded research project Hei-PhoSS ("Highly efficient and intelligent photovoltaic electricity storage") and from 2016 in the MoBat research project on fast charging technology.
Awards
Akasol has won the eCarTec Award , the Bavarian State Prize for Electromobility , three times : in 2010, 2012 and 2014 the Akamodule lithium-ion battery was awarded. In 2012 and 2013 Akasol received the Hessian State Prize for Intelligent Energy . In 2015 Akasol won a Red Dot Design Award for product design for the neeoQube energy storage system .
