The Kolksee near Kasseedorf is in the Ostholstein district in Schleswig-Holstein . The lake, which has no drainage by nature, is completely surrounded by a deciduous forest consisting mainly of beeches.
In the vicinity of the small lake there are other hollows of former lakes. These silted up lakes are overgrown by alder forest. The direct juxtaposition of Kolksee and silted lakes clearly shows the differences in the vegetation around a body of water and in a silted-up area. Like the Kolksee, these silted-up lakes are dead ice holes that formed in the postglacial of the Vistula glaciation .
The bottom of the lake is covered by a layer of humus mud, several meters thick, which has emerged over time from the leaves that sink into the lake every year. The humus substances bind lime and phosphoric acid , among other things . For this reason and as a result of the plants' consumption of carbon dioxide , the lake is poor in lime and nutrients.
Because of these limnological properties and because of its steeply sloping bank, the lake is unsuitable for swimming.
