ELBA , later ELBA Buerosysteme GmbH & Co. KG , was a company for office supplies , whose name has only existed as a trademark since 2014 . The name ELBA originated as an acronym from the neighboring cities of Elberfeld and Barmen ( united to Wuppertal in 1929/1931 ). This was later reinterpreted with the advertising slogan “Successful solutions for better work”. The company's headquarters were last in Gelsenkirchen from 1998 to 2014 . Today the ELBA brand is controlled by HAMELIN GmbH in Gronau (Leine) , which in turn is a subsidiary of the international Groupe Hamelin based in Normandy, France .
The company describes Elba as one of the leading brands for office products and organization systems in Europe. More than 1000 articles are sold under the brand name ELBA. In addition to Gelsenkirchen, production took place in Gleichamberg and Tunisia .
history
Erich Kraut (1891–1978) bought a stationery shop in 1917 and produced files under simple conditions . He converted the business into the ELBA company. From 1930 the industrial production of files and other items began on the factory premises in Wuppertal-Elberfeld.
The pendulum filing system was invented in 1933 , a variant of the hanging filing system that enables the folders to be hung horizontally on just one rail. In 1953, the ELBA rado principle was developed, which enables the lever mechanism brackets to snap into place through two slots and cams in the folder cover, thus making the folder more stable. In 1989, ELBA was one of the first companies to convert a large part of its production to recycling material ; since then, many ELBA products have been awarded the “ Blue Angel ” federal environmental label .
In 1998, the company trading as ELBA Büroysteme Erich Kraut GmbH & Co. had to file for bankruptcy. The production site in Wuppertal was closed, but the business activities could be transferred to the newly founded ELBA Büroysteme Vertriebs-GmbH , which today belongs to the Groupe Hamelin . The place of business was relocated from Wuppertal to Gelsenkirchen. In 2006 the competitor MEHLE in Göttingen was bought up and since then its products have been sold in Gelsenkirchen under the old name.
In 2014 the Gelsenkirchen location was closed and ELBA Buerosysteme GmbH & Co. KG was dissolved. Since then, ELBA brand products have been marketed by HAMELIN GmbH in Gronau (Leine) and manufactured at other company locations.
