Former collegiate monastery Sankt Wolfgang

St. Wolfgang was a collegiate monastery in Sankt Wolfgang in Bavaria in the Diocese of Freising .

history

In the 15th century the pilgrimage to the "Wolfgang Fountain" flourished, the place where St. Wolfgang of Regensburg, according to legend, founded the town of St. Wolfgang around 975. Knight Sigmund von Fraunberg expanded the chapel there around 1460 and wanted to build a collegiate monastery at this church in 1480 with a provost , four canons and a headmaster. Despite the permission of Pope Sixtus IV , the establishment failed due to the resistance of the Isen collegiate monastery , which feared for influence. Later, in 1579, the Bavarian Duke Albrecht V tried again to build a monastery, but again failed due to the lack of monastery buildings.

Another 250 years later, in 1724, the wealthy pastor Kaspar Fiechtner von Schwindau took up the idea again. He succeeded in setting up the foundation, but it was dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization . The church became a parish church , the monastery building became a parsonage, later a community administration and town hall. In spring 2005, the building was thoroughly renovated in keeping with the style.
