The commandant's service was usually assigned for 24 hours and in exceptional cases for 48 hours (weekends). The special position (rights and duties) as a military policeman was indicated to members of the commandant service by wearing white-colored coupling gear (belt, pistol pouch, shoulder strap). This special form of the formation of the military police from members of regular units was the consequence of the negative experiences and criminal behavior of the field gendarmerie of the German armed forces in the Second World War .
