Confederation of Radom

The Confederation of Radom (Polish: Konfederacja radomska ) was a confederation of nobles of Poland-Lithuania that was established on June 23, 1767 to prevent reforms and defend the Golden Freedom . It was also formed as a Catholic answer to the earlier Protestant confederations of Sluzk and Toruń and had a backing of around 74,000 nobles who declared their support for the Confederation of Radom .

Marshal of the Confederation was Karol Stanisław Radziwiłł , another leader was the Primate of Poland , Gabriel Podoski . In fact, the Russian ambassador to Poland, Nikolai Wassiljewitsch Repnin , who was already responsible for the formation of the Protestant and Orthodox confederations, was the driving force behind the union. At his urging, the Confederates made peace with the Polish King Stanisław August Poniatowski and sent an envoy to the Russian Tsarina Catherine II to ask them to preserve and protect the freedoms of Poland-Lithuania. He promoted the unrest in Poland to strengthen Russian control over the state. After the Repnin Sejm , in which Repnin de facto dictated the legislation of the Sejm , Russia's influence on Poland-Lithuania grew even stronger.
