The Conference of National Cultural Institutions (KNK) is an amalgamation of internationally important museums, collections and archives from the new federal states .

history

The association was founded on March 1, 2002 in the Francke Foundations in Halle . The foundation was inspired by an evaluation study, the so-called blue book , drawn up on the initiative of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media . All cultural institutions classified as "nationally important" in the eastern German federal states were summarized in the Blue Book, first published in 2001. The Blue Book (2001, 2002/03 and 2006), which has been published three times - with a slightly different selection and ranking - lists the “lighthouses”, the museums of the national cultural heritage, which have come together to form the Conference of National Cultural Institutions.

The conference serves as a platform for the exchange of content, economic issues and for communicating common interests and objectives. The main objective of the conference is to campaign for the preservation of the cultural heritage in the new federal states and to present this successfully in the Federal Republic of Germany and in other European countries.

Members

All 23 cultural lighthouses listed in the current Blue Book were organized in the conference:
