Kong is a city in the Ivory Coast , in the Savanes region , with 29,190 inhabitants according to the 2014 census. From 1710 to 1895 it was the capital of the former Kong Empire .

history

Kong developed into a trading center when merchants from the Mali Empire began to establish economic relationships with the surrounding Senufo peoples .

The sous-préfecture Kong, in the area from Kong to Dabakala , is said to be the place of origin where merchants of the Mandean people known as Dioula immigrated from the Niger basin in the 12th century. A wrap that is often worn by women in West Africa is named Kong after the trade center. It is a rectangular, hemmed cotton cloth that is knotted over the chest or shoulder and wraps the body.

The Friday Mosque is located in the center of the village, in the Saghanughu district, northeast of the market . It was built by Kunatay-Dyula in 1785 and renovated in 1897, then temporarily destroyed in 1910. The entire complex of the mosque extends over an area of 400 square meters. The mihrāb tower measures 12.5 meters high. Its current condition shows strong traces of erosion and the plaster is cracked. Another preserved mosque is in the Barola district, west of the Friday Mosque. This was built around 1915 after a previous building was destroyed. At 69 square meters it is very small, but has a 7 meter high mihrāb tower.
