Congregation of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother
The Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother ( order abbreviation : SSM ) or Abenberg Franciscan Sisters are a Roman Catholic women's order that follows the rule of the third order of St. Francis of Assisi has as a basis.
history
The congregation was founded by Franziska Streitel in 1883 and officially confirmed two years later. Their main duties are education and nursing.
In 1887 the sisters bought a house in Rome near St. Peter's Square and set up further branches in Germany from there. This was difficult during the time of the Kulturkampf , so the majority of the German sisters worked in Italy and Austria. It was not until 1919 that permanent conventions were established in Germany.
In Abenberg , a town in the Middle Franconian district of Roth , the Augustinian convent Marienburg, which had been abandoned since secularization , was established as the motherhouse in 1920 , to which a seminar for teachers and a seminar for educators were connected. In Abenberg, the sisters set up a girls' secondary school, which has been sponsored by the Eichstätt diocese since 2003 .
The community has also existed in the USA since 1888 . Today there are sisters in Italy, Germany, Austria, USA and Brazil.
