St. Nicholas co-cathedral
The Co- cathedral of St. Nicholas ( Slovak Konkatedrála svätého Mikuláša ) is a Gothic hall church in downtown Prešov , eastern Slovakia , which is dedicated to Nicholas of Myra . Since 2008 it has been the concathedral church of the Archdiocese of Košice , before it was just a simple parish church and known as the Cathedral of St. Nicholas . The church is 54.7 meters long, 34.45 meters wide, 16 meters high and the tower measures 71 meters.
The predecessor of today's church was built in 1230 and was replaced in 1347 by today's parish church, which had a nave with a tower. Between 1502 and 1515 the cathedral was redesigned in the late Gothic style and two side aisles were added, under the direction of the city master Ján Brengyszey. During the Reformation , the church was the scene of several significant events. So in the years 1531–1671 the adoption of Protestantism, 1682–86 the uprising of Emmerich Thököly and 1705–1711 the uprising of Franz II. Rákóczi .
In the 17th and 18th centuries, only minor repairs were carried out, such as the baroque south portal. The church burned down in 1685, 1711, 1780, 1788, 1886 and for the last time in 1887. After the fire of 1788, the classicist main portal was built. The tower was then regotized from 1903 to 1904. Major repairs came in the 1950s and the church received travertine paving , a new facade, new stained glass and a Way of the Cross. The last repairs to date were carried out between 1982 and 1989.
Little has been preserved of the original Gothic and Renaissance furnishings, as most of them were destroyed by fire, especially during the uprisings in the 17th century. For example, some works by master Paul von Leutschau , such as sculptures of angels from the beginning of the 16th century, are Gothic . To this day, however, many Gothic elements have been preserved, such as net vaults, windows and portals. The baroque St. Nicholas altar from 1696 dominates the interior.
