The Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke in Neunkirchen crosses the Pfalzbahn line at the Neunkirchen (Saar) main station . It connects the Kuchenbergstraße coming from Wiebelskirchen with the Bahnhofstraße . The bridge construction previously called the station bridge is the second bridge at this point.

history

After the Pfalzbahn was established in 1850, the rails coming from Ottweiler towards the city center and vice versa were crossed at the same height as the rails. With the growing traffic, this type of crossing became increasingly problematic. When there was even a death around 1875, a solution was considered. The plan for an underpass failed due to the unwillingness of the homeowners to sell two nearby houses, which were to be demolished. It was decided to build a bridge instead. The construction of the bridge was commissioned in 1875. The first bridge was led over a ramp and a retaining wall was built. As early as 1914, this station bridge was no longer able to cope with the demands of road traffic, which was steadily increasing. However, plans for a new building failed due to the unwillingness of the railway authorities to remedy this. The construction ultimately failed due to the Second World War . The bridge was bombed during the war and closed to all traffic.

By September 27, 1947, the bridge was repaired and opened for vehicle traffic. Military Governor Gilbert Grandval traveled to the new inauguration . A little more than ten years later, the bridge had become dilapidated again. Due to the damage it was closed in 1958. While road traffic was being diverted, pedestrians were given a workaround from February 22, 1961. It was decided to build a new bridge, the old bridge was demolished in June 1961. The construction time was about two years and cost 4.2 million DM .

The new bridge is 60 meters long. Coming from Wiebelskirchen, the width is 47 meters. The bridge narrows to 21 meters on the city side. The station can be reached by pedestrians via a pedestrian walkway.

On July 19, 1967, the bridge previously known as the Bahnhofsbrücke was officially renamed the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke. It honors Konrad Adenauer , the first Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Two bridges over the Blies were named after Kurt Schumacher and Theodor Heuss on the same day . In popular parlance, the bridge has remained the station bridge to this day.
