Constantine Hill

The Constantine Hill is a seven meter high elevation in the Vienna Prater .

history

The hill was created during the excavation work for the rotunda on the occasion of the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna. It was named after the chief steward Konstantin zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1828-1896), who had been involved in the construction management of the world exhibition.

location

The hill is located south of the Prater Hauptallee , at the junction to the Laternenweg . Adjacent to the hill is the Constantine Pond , which was previously used for boat trips. Below the Constantine Hill was the Hirschenstadl , where deer and roe deer were kept until 1867. From a structural point of view, the oldest bridge in Vienna still in existence, the Konstantinsteg , opened in 1873 and now a listed building , leads to the hill.

restaurant

Constantine Hill at the beginning of the 20th century

The restaurant "Am Hügel" , which was built by the chief steward's office and opened by the hotelier Eduard Sacher (1843-1892) as a tenant on May 1, 1871, was located on the Constantine Hill until 1977 , from 1895: Sachergarten in the (kk) Prater , from 1905: coffee Konstantin Hill Restaurant , from 1926 (as a coffee house): Konstantin Hill , later: Café Restaurant Konstantin Hill . A Constantinople Association, consisting primarily of artists, intended to revitalize the premises owned by the federal government and administered by the City of Vienna, provided that the building authorities were able to determine whether the building could be renovated from mid-August 1977. The City of Vienna had a positive attitude towards the project, which was valued at around ten million schillings (737,000 euros), and wanted to support it primarily by providing building materials.

As early as 1968, the Federal Monuments Office , which had been asked for a decision, had no objection to demolishing the building because neither the architecture nor the interior were of particular artistic value . In the previous years in particular, the long-standing dilapidated business premises had been neglected by a tenant, contrary to the contract, which had put the load-bearing capacity of the primary structure in doubt.

Shortly after the new plans for the property were published, a fire was started in the building by unknown perpetrators on the night of August 22nd to 23rd, 1977 - which resulted in the demolition of the remains of the building.

Remarks

  1. Eduard Sacher bought the adjoining forest stone garden and set up the Sachergarten restaurant in the summer house on it . It is not likely that the Café Am Hügel remained part of the Sachergarten until around 1905 , as Sacher is said to have sold the not sufficiently accepted (because of its high prices) business on the Constantine Hill to an entrepreneur called Lantos, who was a public attraction at the Property hosted monster concerts. - Bartel F.
