Consumer cooperative forward liberation
The consumer cooperative "Forward Liberation" was a large consumer cooperative in Wuppertal . It emerged from the unification of the cooperatives “Liberation” (in today's Elberfeld district ) and “Vorwärts” (in today's Barmen district ) and “Household” in Velbert . Previously, several attempts to unite the Elberfeld and Barmer cooperatives had failed.
With almost 50,000 member families, 800 employees and 130 distribution points, it was one of the largest cooperatives in Germany.
Due to good growth, a new operations center with an area of 130,000 m² was put into operation in the Clausen district in 1931 . The building was considered the largest operating center of a consumer cooperative in Germany and supplied over 200,000 people in 33 communities. In the time of National Socialism , the consumer cooperative came "forward-liberation" as all other relevant institutions under great political pressure, was first harassed, then into line and disbanded finally 1935th The rescue company was Bergische Lebensmittel GmbH , and in 1946 the consumer cooperative Wuppertal eGmbH was founded .
In 1978 Gebr. Happich GmbH took over the entire building complex of the former consumer cooperative.
The ensemble of buildings on Konsumstrasse was recognized as a monument on February 24, 1997 and entered in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal.
