Double bass concert

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A double bass concert is an instrumental concert for double bass as a solo instrument and orchestra . The first double bass concerts were written in the late classical period, by Domenico Dragonetti and Johannes Sperger , among others . Other early double bass concertos come from Johann Baptist Vanhal , Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf and Joseph Haydn , although the latter has been lost. The double bass is still not considered a typical solo instrument. Compared to the other string instruments, the selection of double bass concertos is relatively small. This is also due to the fact that the double bass sounds comparatively quiet as a solo instrument and it is therefore difficult to coordinate the soloist and orchestra. In addition, virtuoso double bass players were rather rare. It is thanks to virtuosos like Giovanni Bottesini or Sergei Kussewizki that the solo repertoire for double bass has been expanded and that well-known composers are also interested in the double bass as a solo instrument. It was not until the 20th century that many new works for double bass were composed, among others by Eduard Tubin, Hans Werner Henze and John Harbison.
